Simply, Gaia is the world I live on. It's been called Earth sometimes, but it's a very different Earth than anyone seems to get, which is why it's better called Gaia.

Gaia is where every life is born and is given a spirit. But when the body dies it goes back to Gaia with all of it's experiences. No idea why it wants that, but with that happening, our world doesn't die on us.

The lifestream...if it helps any, it's also called spirit energy. It carries the memories, emotions, and the knowledge of everyone and everything that has ever lived on Gaia. Some of the lifestream are used to create new life on the planet, but not all of it, or there would be a lot of people, and a dead planet. But the energy of a person returns to the planet, they die and give the lifestream their memories, emotions and knowledge.

And I'm not completely sure how, but it also kinda acts like an afterlife, with so many memories, and knowledge stay together...which is possibly why when my friend fell into it, he was pretty much in a coma for a few months. We're only made to be around a little bit of the lifestream.

Mako comes into the world when some of the lifestream is processed by the ShinRa people. Creating mako energy for electricity, and also for condensing it into Materia. (Which will come later)

Though mako has its muagenic properties, since it can be produced in reactors, most people that like the world, hate the things, but sadly, people are idiots and think running water is more important than running water. If used too much, the planet will die.

Mako is also just as dangerous as the lifestream. With long exposure, it can lead to mutation, poisoning, or death.

Materia is either crystallized mako. Materia calls to the wisdom of the lifestream in a way to manipulate things around it. And a very simple way to say how to use materia is a quick shock triggered by the user's mind waves. Which is exactly why we use it in battle. They're easier to use since your mind is racing. It can also be done while just standing somewhere, but then you've gotta try.

And why can we use them here? Well there's enough of the lifestream in me to use it without trouble, since I was given a spirit through the lifestream. But why others can use it? The materia still have the knowledge of how they are to be used. They are condensed pieces of the lifestream. So there's no reason they wouldn't be able to work here.

Now while most materia is created through the mako reactors, there are still a few Mako Springs around the world that create special materia that can't be made...I've only seen it once. And they're very pretty. You kinda just want to sit there and take a break.

To make them stronger, we only have to use them more and more. The more we use them, the more they grow from those monsters they killed. And once they get to a certain size, we know that they can't get any stronger.

And for the weird part of using them without any accessories, and putting it in my arm. Well, it's not really used all that much. Only low level small ones can do it, and a few others, but since we both have the lifestream in us, it can go right in. Still feels weird though, but it's a way to hold them if you have no other way to do so, or need to hide the fact that you have them!

Using materia in a weapon is really helpful. Like my shuriken, put any element in there, and anything in it's path will catch fire, or freeze. Usually on monsters, it's even easier to hit them all while staying at a distance...because it takes a bit for my shuriken to come back.

Used in other weapons like a sword or gun, things like that do double damage. Getting sliced by a huge sword, then being set on fire does a lot of damamge, and it's fun to watch the aftermath.

Using materia in an accessory is probably the easiest way to use them, and the safest too. Just pick which one you want to use, and the enemy might suddenly be struck by lightning, or frozen in place. And you didn't even have to make a move to do it.

Least effect way ever. You can only carry two, maybe three if you're the same size as Barret. And it's a bit different than using them on an accessory. You have to pay more attention to which one you're using, and not easy in a fight. Too much use, earns you less energy.

As for being creepy enough to put one in your arms, (Normal people can only handle one) it's like using them with an accessory...but without the restrictions of how many they can have at one time. And for all I know, they might be able to be used with weapons. So...no fair.
